What Is Typhoid?
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. It is transmitted through the ingestion of food or water contaminated by the feces or urine of an infected person. Symptoms typically develop 1–3 weeks after exposure and can range from mild to severe. Common symptoms include:
- High fever
- Malaise and headache
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Rose-colored spots on the chest
- Enlarged spleen and liver
In some cases, a healthy carrier state may persist after the acute illness has resolved.
