Trichomonas Vaginalis Swab Test

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a tiny parasite, Trichomonas Vaginalis. This flagellated protozoan parasite is the most common pathogenic protozoan infection in humans, particularly in industrialized countries. While both men and women can be infected, women are more likely to show symptoms, whereas men often remain asymptomatic. The infection is most commonly transmitted through vaginal intercourse, though it can also be spread via direct, skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 160 million cases of trichomoniasis are acquired annually worldwide. In North America alone, between 5 and 8 million new infections occur each year, with asymptomatic cases making up as much as 50%. Treatment typically involves medications like metronidazole or tinidazole.

Test Overview

The Trichomonas Vaginalis Rapid Test Cassette (Vaginal Swab) is a membrane-based immunoassay that qualitatively detects Trichomonas Vaginalis antigens. The test is interpreted visually through the development of a color change on the internal strip. Anti-Trichomonas Vaginalis antibodies are immobilized on the test region of the membrane. During the test, the sample reacts with anti-Trichomonas Vaginalis antibodies that are conjugated to colored particles, which migrate through the membrane by capillary action. If sufficient Trichomonas Vaginalis antigen is present, a colored line will appear in the test region, indicating a positive result. The appearance of a colored line in the control region confirms that the test was performed correctly, ensuring the proper specimen volume was added and the membrane wicking occurred.
