What Is Tuberculosis (TB)?

Tuberculosis (TB) is primarily transmitted through airborne droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, or talking. Poorly ventilated areas pose the highest risk for exposure to the infection. TB is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting for the highest number of deaths caused by a single infectious agent. The World Health Organization reports over 8 million new active TB cases each year, with nearly 3 million deaths attributed to TB annually. Early diagnosis is essential for effective TB control, as it enables prompt treatment initiation and reduces the spread of infection.

Traditional TB diagnostic methods such as skin tests, sputum smear, sputum culture, and chest x-rays have significant limitations. While newer techniques like PCR-DNA amplification and interferon-gamma assays have been introduced, they require lab equipment, skilled personnel, and may not be practical or cost-effective, especially in developing countries. Serological methods, such as the TB Rapid Test, offer an attractive alternative due to their simplicity, low cost, and non-invasive nature, without the need for mycobacteria detection.

The TB Tuberculosis Rapid Test Device (Serum/Plasma) is a qualitative test designed to detect anti-TB antibodies (from M. tuberculosis, M. bovis, and M. africanum) in whole blood, serum, or plasma. This test uses a combination of recombinant antigens to detect elevated levels of anti-TB antibodies.
