What Is Syphilis?

Treponema Pallidum (TP) is the causative agent of the venereal disease syphilis. TP is a spirochete bacterium with an outer envelope and a cytoplasmic membrane. Relatively little is known about this organism compared to other bacterial pathogens.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the number of syphilis cases has increased significantly since 1985. Contributing factors include the crack cocaine epidemic and high incidences of prostitution among drug users. One study reported that many HIV-infected women showed reactive syphilis serological test results. Syphilis is characterized by multiple clinical stages and long periods of latent, asymptomatic infection.

Primary syphilis is defined by the presence of a chancre (ulcer) at the site of inoculation. The antibody response to the TP bacterium can be detected within 4 to 7 days after the chancre appears. The infection remains detectable until the patient receives adequate treatment. The One Step Syphilis Test uses a double antigen combination (syphilis antigen-coated particle and syphilis antigen) to detect TP antibodies (IgG and IgM) qualitatively and selectively in whole blood, serum, or plasma.

How Do I Use These Lancets?

To use the lancets, simply twist off the protective cap until you feel it separate from the device. Then, press the platform firmly against the chosen area. Once finished, push the sterile cap back onto the needle and dispose of it properly.

The lancets' double spring technology minimizes the amount of effort and penetrative force needed, reducing any discomfort during use.
