What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea, also known as the ‘clap,’ is the second most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the UK. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, which grows and multiplies quickly in moist, warm areas of the body. Gonorrhoea can infect areas such as the cervix, urethra, anus, rectum, or throat. In women, the cervix is the most common site of infection. The name "gonorrhoea" means ‘flow of seed.’

What Causes Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is passed on through vaginal, anal, and oral sex, though sometimes physical contact can also spread the infection. It can also be passed from an infected mother to her newborn during delivery, potentially causing eye infections that could lead to blindness.

Consistent and correct use of condoms during sexual activity is the best way to avoid gonorrhoea, like most sexually transmitted diseases.

What Are the Symptoms of Gonorrhoea?

Symptoms of gonorrhoea may appear anywhere between 1 and 14 days after exposure.

In women, symptoms may include:

  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • A change in vaginal discharge (more yellow or bloody, often with a strong odor)
  • Low abdominal pain

In men, symptoms are typically more noticeable and may include:

  • Discharge from the tip of the penis
  • Inflammation or dull pain in the testes
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Irritation or discharge from the anus

What Treatment is Available for Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is usually treated with antibiotics taken by mouth. If you are diagnosed with gonorrhoea, it is crucial that your partner also gets tested and treated, even if they show no symptoms, to prevent reinfection.

A follow-up test is typically performed after treatment to ensure the infection has been cleared.

How Will Gonorrhoea Affect Me in the Future?

If left untreated, gonorrhoea can cause complications. In women, the most common complication is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (P.I.D.), which occurs when the infection spreads to the uterus and fallopian tubes. P.I.D. can lead to infertility or an ectopic pregnancy.

In men, untreated gonorrhoea can cause inflammation of the testes, which may lead to infertility. Rarely, gonorrhoea can spread to the bloodstream and infect the joints. If you are pregnant and have gonorrhoea, you risk passing the infection to your baby during delivery.
