What is Feline Panleucopenia Virus?
Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV), also commonly referred to as feline distemper, is a highly contagious and life-threatening viral disease in cats.
What are the symptoms of Feline Panleucopenia Virus?
Symptoms of panleukopenia can include any of the following:
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
How do cats contract the infection?
Feline parvovirus (FPV) is the cause of feline panleukopenia. Cats can become infected through contact with:
- Infected blood, faeces, or urine.
- Fleas that have fed on an infected cat.
- Contaminated materials such as bedding, food dishes, or shared equipment.
- Humans who have not washed their hands properly between handling cats.
Why do I need this Test?
Early diagnosis of FPV is crucial for saving your cat's life. Immediate treatment improves survival chances significantly, as cats that make it through the first 48 hours are very likely to recover fully. Although recovery may take a few weeks, cats that survive will develop immunity and no longer pass the virus.
How do I perform the Test?
Performing the test is quick and easy:
- Use the enclosed cotton swab to collect a faecal or vomit sample.
- Mix the sample with the test solution.
- Add 3 drops of the mixture to the test cassette.
Results will be visible after 5 minutes:
- Positive Result: Two lines appear in the test window.
- Negative Result: One line appears in the test window.
Note: For the most accurate results, test during the shedding phase or when symptoms appear. Testing outside this period may result in a false negative.
What should I do if I get a positive result?
If the test result is positive, immediately consult your Veterinarian to begin life-saving treatment as soon as possible.
