What is Canine Parvovirus?

Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause life-threatening illness in dogs. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells, severely affecting the intestinal tract and white blood cells. In young dogs, it can damage the heart muscle, leading to lifelong cardiac issues. Puppies aged six weeks to six months are the most vulnerable.

What are the symptoms of Canine Parvovirus?

General symptoms of CPV include:

  • Lethargy
  • Severe vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloody, foul-smelling diarrhoea leading to dehydration

How do dogs contract the infection?

CPV is extremely contagious and spreads through contact with infected dog faeces. The virus can survive for months on surfaces like food bowls, shoes, clothes, carpets, and floors. Unvaccinated dogs, especially in urban areas, are at high risk.

What is Canine Coronavirus?

Canine Coronavirus (CCV) is another contagious intestinal disease found in dogs worldwide. Unlike Parvovirus, CCV infections are usually mild.

What are the symptoms of Canine Coronavirus?

Symptoms of CCV may include:

  • Several days of diarrhoea
  • Depression
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting

How do dogs contract the infection?

CCV is spread through direct contact with infected dog faeces.

Why do I need this Test?

CPV and CCV are the two biggest viral causes of diarrhoea in puppies and can present with similar symptoms. Early diagnosis is critical:

  • CPV: Has a very high death rate (91%) if untreated. Intensive therapy and system support can lead to recovery, with an overall survival rate of 70% if treatment begins early.
  • CCV: Typically mild and self-limiting but may require supportive care for severe cases.

Identifying which virus is present allows for appropriate treatment and helps prevent further contagion. Dogs infected with CPV remain contagious for at least 2 months after recovery and must be isolated.

How do I perform the Test?

Performing the test is simple:

  1. Use the enclosed cotton swab to collect a faecal or vomit sample.
  2. Mix the sample with the test solution.
  3. Add 3 drops to the test cassette.

Results will appear within 5 minutes:

  • Positive: Two lines in the test window.
  • Negative: One line in the test window.

Note: Testing during the shedding phase or when symptoms appear gives the most accurate results. Testing outside this period may produce a false negative.

What should I do if I get a positive result?

  • Positive for CPV: See your Vet immediately for treatment to improve survival chances.
  • Positive for CCV: Visit your Vet, especially if symptoms are severe, for supportive care.
