What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by an infection in the vaginal or uterine tract, specifically from the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria.
How Common is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia has become increasingly common, especially among young adults and teenagers. It is estimated that around 20% of young women may have a Chlamydia infection.
What are the Symptoms of Chlamydia?
In women, symptoms may include:
- An unusual vaginal discharge
- Bleeding after intercourse
- Bleeding between menstrual periods
- Abdominal or pelvic pain
In men, symptoms may include:
- Discharge from the penis
- Burning sensation during urination
- Swollen and/or painful testicles
However, about 75% of women and 50% of men with Chlamydia may not show any symptoms of infection.
Why is it Important to Test for Chlamydia?
In women, if left untreated, Chlamydia can spread to the pelvic area, infecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, which can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), a serious infection. Chlamydia is also a major cause of cervicitis, urethritis, and endometriosis. Untreated infections can lead to infertility, which is why it’s essential to test for Chlamydia, especially for women who are trying to conceive. Any unprotected sex can lead to the contraction of the infection.
