What's the difference between mg/dL and mlo/L?

In Ireland, like most European countries, mmol/L (millimoles per litre) is the standard unit of measurement for blood glucose levels in glucose meters, commonly used for diabetic management. However, some devices imported from the U.S. display readings in mg/dL (milligrams per decilitre), the standard unit in the United States.

We supply glucose meters in both mmol/L and mg/dL versions. However, unless you have a specific requirement for mg/dL or are accustomed to using it, we recommend sticking with mmol/L, as it is the standard unit of measurement for blood glucose levels in Ireland and across Europe.

If using a device with mg/dL, you can convert the readings for consistency with mmol/L:

To convert mg/dL to mmol/L: divide the value by 18.
To convert mmol/L to mg/dL: multiply the value by 18.
For example:

100 mg/dL = 5.6 mmol/L
7 mmol/L = 126 mg/dL
When sourcing or selling glucose meters in Ireland, it’s essential to ensure they use mmol/L unless a specific need for mg/dL compatibility is required.

Why is a code free glucose meter better?

A code-free glucose meter is often considered better due to its convenience, ease of use, and reduced potential for errors. Here's why:

1. No Need to Enter or Match Codes
Traditional glucose meters require users to manually input or verify a code from the test strip container to ensure accurate readings. This process can be inconvenient and prone to errors if the wrong code is entered or if it doesn’t match the test strips being used. Code-free meters eliminate this step entirely.

2. Improved Accuracy
By removing the need to manually code the meter, the chances of mismatched codes leading to inaccurate blood sugar readings are significantly reduced. Code-free meters automatically calibrate themselves to the test strips, ensuring greater reliability.

3. User-Friendly
Code-free meters are simpler to use, especially for elderly users, people with poor vision, or those who may struggle with the additional step of entering a code. This ease of use can encourage more consistent testing.

4. Time-Saving
Skipping the coding step saves time, making the testing process quicker and more efficient.

5. Reduced Risk of Test Strip Waste
Incorrect coding with traditional meters can lead to wasted test strips due to invalid or inaccurate readings. A code-free meter minimizes this waste.

6. Better for First-Time Users
For those new to glucose monitoring, code-free meters simplify the process, reducing the learning curve and making it easier to manage diabetes.

Overall, code-free glucose meters provide a seamless and reliable way to monitor blood sugar levels, making them a preferred choice for many users.
